2007 | 537 white gauze bandages | Approximate display (width x depth x height): 43.3 x 33.4 x 8.2 in. / 110 x 85 x 21 cm.
537, is an entreaty for peace, it’s a call to end the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan, who have been fighting for control over the Siachen Glacier, since 1984. The gauze bandages illustrate care, protection and healing for the many lives lost during the conflict.
When 537 bandages are unrolled, they add up to a total length of one mile. This one mile is one of the 47 miles, which is also the length of the glacier (data as of 2007). 537 was the first artwork developed in 2007 for the Siachen Glacier Conflict and has continued to inspire the development of new works.
